Sickness Benefit
A Sickness Benefit is the predetermined compensating amount of money in case of temporarily work incapacity. The Sickness benefit is paid to insured persons for the loss of income due to illness or injury. The amount is set at 60% of insurable salary of the person concerned. Insured women, who are unable to work during pregnancy or within 6 months after giving birth to a child will also receive Sickness benefit.
If the insured person is still able to perform a part of his work, the Sickness Benefit compensate 60% of the differential between full performance salary and the income gathered for part time work.
Qualifying Period for Sickness Benefit.
To be entitled to Sickness Benefits, an insured person needs to prove
a minimum of 3 months contribution payment within the 12 months prior to the
event. The change of employer will have no influence on this prerequisite.
Calculation of Sickness Benefit.
According to Article 29 of the Labor law, the employer is responsible
for continuing the salary payment for the first 7 days. Thereafter, SSO will
pay the equivalent to 60% of the salary of the beneficiary concerned.
In detail, the sickness benefit is set at 60% of the average of insured amount
of salary or wages during the previous 6 months prior to the leave. In
case of partly incapacity, the same rules are applied. SSO will pay 60% of
the differential between the earnings insured for the former insured salary
and the new reduced salary.
Duration of Sickness Benefit.
SSO will pay sickness benefit for the duration mentioned in the treating
doctor's certificate. The sickness benefit, however, will apply for a maximum
period of 1 year. However, if, after completion of this one-year period, the
employee's health is expected to normalize, SSO will continue to provide the
sickness benefit for up to additional 6 months. On the contrary, if within one-year
the employee's health status is not expected to improve, SSO will provide an
invalidity benefit to the employee.
